Begonia
Key warning symptoms:
- Rings
- Mottle or mosaic
- Stunting
- Deformation
- Stem necrosis
Impatiens necrotic spot virus, the pathogen most often detected in
begonias, causes many different symptoms including dead areas on
stems, mottled or mosaic patterns, lines, ringspots, or yellow, white
or brown spots. The closely related tomato spotted wilt virus also
causes varying symptoms. Both viruses are transmitted by thrips and by
propagating infected plants.
Begonia yellow spot, caused by Tobacco ringspot virus, is a disease
that causes yellowish to white spots and yellow mottled
patterns. Symptoms can resemble natural variegation. The virus can be
transmitted by nematodes in soil or by propagating infected plants.
