ImmunoStrip for Hosta virus X

Acronym: HVX
Group: Potexvirus
Vector: mechanical

Hosta virus X (HVX) is a damaging and prevalent virus of hosta potentially capable of infecting all varieties. Hosta is the only known host of HVX at this time. The virus is spread mechanically by contaminated tools, hands or any activity that puts plants in contact with infected plant sap. HVX is not thought to be spread by insects or nematodes. Some Hosta varieties are more susceptible to HVX than others. Symptoms are quite variable among varieties with some plants showing no symptoms at all.  There is no treatment for virus infected plants. The only control method is to purchase and propagate from non-infected plants and identify and destroy any existing infected plants.

The HVX ImmunoStrip® is an on-site tool to quickly identify plants infected with HVX. It can be used to test leaves and roots. The test is based on antibodies developed by Dr. Ben Lockhart of the University of Minnesota who first identified and characterized the virus. The test was validated using over 35 different varieties of Hosta. Several HVX isolates were tested including isolates from Dr. Lockhart and from several infected plants of commercial production sites.

The HVX ImmunoStrip® test is an ideal tool for on-site screening of plants. Use as a part of regular scouting regimes. Use it to test plants before purchasing or before accepting a shipment of plants. The HVX ImmunoStrips® have a one-year guaranteed shelf-life and are sold with buffer filled sample extraction bags.
